Memorial places in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – "Political Memorials"

The term Political Memorials subsumes everything that reminds people of the history of persecution and resistance. i.e. the variety ranges from memorial places over stones, trees, cemeteries to buildings, whole towns and villages. Many a place does not seem to be of 'political' importance at first sight. The village of Mestlin, e.g., was founded in the 1950s as a so-called 'socialist' village. As an example of how people were supposed to live, this project was not only a matter of prestige for the government but a very important political issue.
Thus, it is not just an oddity in cultural history but a place of significance and it illustrates that the term political is used here in a much wider context than usual.
